Masjids Doing Great Dawah In The Communities

As many of you know, the food give-aways with KPFA Radio Station in Berkeley, California has been one great sucess after another,-  INCREDIBLE SUCCESS alhamdu’lillah. You can listen to or download the broadcast on EarTyme of the PSA for the Free Food Donation for July 2, 2009, by clicking the link. Everyone came from miles around and was treated with as much food and flowers as they could pack, including the staff at Pacifica Radio Corporate and KPFA al’hamdu’lillah. This event was sponsored by Masjid al-IslamThe Oakland Islamic Center-, Masjidul Waritheen– , Jama’atus Salaam– , Go Wireless, Emad’s Tune Up, and The Justice For Ali Campaign– all of Oakland.

KPFA’s employees now want to do this donation on a weekly basis after the overwhelming back-to-back-to back successes of the previous public food give-aways that had people calling and coming from as far away as Santa Barbara and north/east to Oregon and Nevada. There are no words to express the sincere gratitude and “Thanks” conveyed on the part of the public and the employees and staff at Pacifica Radio and KPFA. JOB WELL DONE Masjids!!!

The June 25, 2009 event was sponsored by Masjid Tasbeeh, The Muslim Community Center, Jama’atus Salaam, Go Wireless, Emad’s Tune Up, and The Justice For Ali Campaign. These type of promotions are impossible without their involvement in these efforts, insha’Allah. This is incredible Dawah! Jazzak Allah Khair Khayrun.

On several occassions I have pointed out to many people at Pacifica/KPFA, a young man standing next to Snoop Dogg in a framed picture proudly displayed on the main wall outside their main conference room, from a rally to save Tookie Williams from execution held in November 2005. That young man is Imam Abu Qadir al-Amin. They were even more humbled when they acknowledged that he and the Muslim Community Canter was one of the sponsors for this event.

You can listen to or download the broadcasts of the PSA for the Free Food Donation for June 25, 2009 by clicking this link.

The “Thank You’s” to the Masajids and Muslims businesses; Masjid al-Islam, Masjidul Waritheen, and the Oakland Islamic Center, as well as Muslim business owners Go Wireless Mobile and Emad’s Tune Up, all of Oakland, California for their invaluable support in providing all the food and floral decorations with 100’s of bouquets of flowers and more for the “Nadra Foster Benefit” at La Pena Restaurant in Berkeley was aired live on the “Full Circle Show” with Host Joy Moore on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 7:00 PM. Jazzak Allah Khair Khayrun. Part 2 of that broadcast will be tomorrow at 7:00 pm on KPFA. Oddly enough, while the broadcast was being aired, unbeknownst to the crew, Khalil Yasin was there providing food and refreshments for them for their enjoyment after the show. They still have not stop thanking him and the above mentioned parties. You can listen to or download the broadcast of the “Thank You’s” mentioned above by clicking on this link. Be sure and spread the word to support and acknowledge the Dawah these masajids and businesses are doing for our communities and Islam.

Masjid Tasbeeh– Oakland, The Muslim Community Center– San Francisco, and Jama’atus Salaam– Oakland, Go Wireless, Emad’s Tune Up, and The Justice For Ali Campaign– all of Oakland, and Muslim Student Association of U. C. Berkeley recently sponsored one at the Black Dot Cafe with KPFA’s Hard Knock Radio, Full Circle, Block Report Radio Programs, masha’Allah. This group of radio programs and organizations announced their “Thank You’s” to the islamic groups on air and published them in this weeks Bay View Newspaper in San Francisco and wants to have the donations all over Northern California on a weekly basis!

After the overwhelming success of that event, I received the following email requesting to have two more at  locations in Oakland and another two in San Francisco. They want to do a news story on the Dawah efforts of the Masajids and businesses that make this all possible.

I ask that you, as members of these communities, make the decision, and if you decide to go forward with the events which the radio station programs wi
ll promote, I ask that you be present to hand out food with the members of your community and share in the interviews with the respective Imams, Shayks, and Amirs and photos for the news story. Here’s the email:

Ice Cube

Date: Thu, Dec 10, 2009

Showtime: 8:00 PM

Doors open: 7:00 PM

www.icecube.com

When rap exploded creatively and commercially in the late 1980s, Ice
Cube was at the forefront of the expansion. As the lyrical brains
behind N.W.A, the Los Angeles-based rapper instantly became a major player in the music game by leading a musical revolution with brutal, profane, politically-infused music that, for the first time in the genres history, sold millions of albums with N.W.As Straight Outta Compton. As a solo artist, Ice Cube became raps premier act with the release of the searing masterpieces AmeriKKKas Most Wanted and Death Certificate.

Now, after becoming Hollywoods most bankable actor thanks to his Barbershop and Friday franchises, Ice Cube returns to his first artistic love, rapping. Laugh Now, Cry Later, the multi-platinum, award-winning music icons first solo album in six years, simmers with celebration, as well as the rage, reflection and introspection that are the hallmarks of timeless music. I feel Laugh Now, Cry Later is the state of the world, of America, of urban America, of hip-hop, Ice Cube explains of his seventh solo album. It seems like everybody is playing and nobody’s worried about anything.

On the explosive Scott Storch (50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Beyonce) produced Why We Thugs, Ice Cube blasts an oppressive system that cripples Americas ghettos and fosters the perpetual ruin of such areas as South Central, Compton and Long Beach, Los Angeles metropolitan areas that have been war zones for decades.

Now, with the impending release of Laugh Now, Cry Later, his first solo album released on his own Lench Mob Records, Ice Cube is on top of his creative game and relishing in his ability to make his latest album at his own pace and on his own terms.

I’m putting my money where my mouth is because theres nothing a major label can do for me that I cant do for myself, he says. Not being signed to a particular label, putting it out myself, not having to worry about what a company or anyone else has to think about the record, being able to just go in and do it how I feel it with no timelines or deadlines, it made me comfortable. I was able to recommitment myself to rhyming and rapping. That all molded the way that this record sounds, which is important because I want my records to last the rest of the year when they come out.

Truth be told, Laugh Now, Cry Later will last well into the next decade.

As the lyrical brains behind N.W.A, the Los Angeles-based rapper instantly became a major player in the music game by leading a musical revolution with brutal, profane, politically-infused music that, for the first time in the genres history, sold millions of albums with N.W.As Straight Outta Compton.

Lesson From The Iranian Election

If we have learned nothing from the Iranian Election and subsequent protests, we should have learned the power of the internet, more importantly- YouTube, Twitter, Google, Yahoo!, email, cell phone video, FaceBook, MySpace, etc., and how it can be used effectively to launch a movement. I can’t encourage you more now than ever to enlist this same communications model by forming groups within every masajid and linked nationally/internationally to act as our own “griots” and news services. I ask ALL of you to join my Twitter following ( http://twitter.com/ajalil ) and form your own! We all know that Google, AT&T, Twitter, etc., are partners with the government in gathering and sharing information and intelligence manipulation, as we have been aware that the government has infiltrated groups for years. But don’t let that bother you, you will not engage in any illegal activity and can not afford not to use the tool. Do it!

We will produce original music, of the highest professional quality by the most respected artist in the industry. Every track will be of the highest quality recording and will be mixed “radio ready.”
The concept is simple: one might know our roster for their respective careers, but now we will expose their creative musical side for this worthy cause. Every artist and track will stand on its own, centered around the Project material and theme. Once two commercial CD/DVD editions are completed, the estimated timetable to officially launch nationally will be determined, planned and executed.
This is truly a benefit for the those in need. The bottom line is, producers will provide the tracks to the recording artist, studio time where possible, mixing, remixing and mastering support. Being that we are non exclusive, the Family retains 100% ownership and may continue to license the songs to other interested parties. Something like this has never been compiled before and brings a uniqueness to the market. I know that the fans of these artists will really enjoy getting to know this side of them.

***** Want to have YOUR NEWS broadcast?

NOW YOU CAN!

There has been a delay in the debut of Black Television News Channel (BTNC), until January 2010. BTNC announced a multi-year carriage agreement with Comcast Cable (CMCSA, CMCSK), the country’s leading provider of cable, entertainment and communications products and services, for a multi-city market to launch in 2009, that will be a 24/7 cable news network that provides original news programming with a distinctly African-American perspective which will fill the major void in coverage of African American-focused news and features by today’s mainstream media.

In our effort to succeed where BET and TV One has failed, we will actually have an excellent news department that focuses quality journalism on topics pertinent to the African-American community, as well as throughout the African diaspora.

BTNC will have the first regular, nightly, national news anchors in 24 hour broadcast news history to report on news aimed at the hungry black news audience, and it would be a welcome sight!

The broadcast will be stimulating and informational, and the personalities articulate and professional that “keep it real” to meet the needs of a very diverse people within a single ethnic group.

It will deliver legitimate news introduced from all perspectives from the various corners of the black community representing all our points of view, which will differ depending on where the camera takes you and who you talk to.

As there is a big world outside of our neighborhoods, the programming will feature people who are not African American, but who pique our interests and some of whom directly or indirectly affect black households and families as well as the rest of the world. You will see your neighbors and friends, too!

So the diversity of news that will be provided will be correct, honest and help the digestion of information and not tell you how to live your life. BTNC will give you the next dimension of viewer new by adding the “thought provoking, life changing element” to your news experience. It will bring inspiring commentary that will add something new to every very controversial topic!

BTNC’S KEY TO SUCCESS?

People are asking “how can BTNC succeed when others have failed?”
It’s a tired old saying, we know, but it happens to be true! BTNC’s success comes from thinking outside the box.
For instance, if you think inside the box (put your mouse inside the box), the box…slows or even stops.
Interesting?
If you move your mouse (and symbolically your thinking) away from the box…and you gain momentum.
We rest our case.
BTNC will continue to think outside the box, and will stay as far away from the box as is possible to achieve maximum momentum.
(Somewhat addicting, isn’t it?)

Below these links is some info on me that may enlighten you that I don’t share with many people. You may not know I don’t believe in “No one’s ever done that before”!
Click on my Haas Linked In Profile here or above and you will find things that I’m sure you did not know.
There is also info and links about and to many things I’ve never shared with too many people. The below profile contains the IRS case, the Law and Business schools subject matters including the Shariah-Riba compliant Tax Course and “White Paper” on the “al-Hakim Federal Tax Ruling” from the Wake Forest University School of Law, the portrait, the link to see the ABC- News special on the music conference at Masjid Warith Deen and the Historic 1979 BALSA Law Conference.
There’s info on the “Rap The Vote” concert/voter registration political campaign I did in Russia with Hammer in 1995 to secure the re-election of Russian President Boris Yeltsin. That strategy was hailed internationally as a political coup that saved Russian democracy and was the basis for the movie “Spinning Boris“starring Jeff Goldblum.

Please give me a call after you have had a chance to review everything and let’s arrange a chat session to discuss some possibilities. It’s always my pleasure and I hope to speak with you soon.

Leon Powe’s Free “Team Powe Basketball Clinic” This Saturday, August 26, 2006

Leon Powe didn’t attend his first basketball camp until he was 15 or 16 years old. Before that, there was nothing available to the former Oakland Tech High and Cal star. “I couldn’t go anyway … I didn’t have any money,” Powe said. “That would have been huge for me.”
Money won’t be an issue for youngsters on Saturday, when Powe, about to begin his rookie season with the Boston Celtics, hosts the first Team Powe Basketball Camp. Open to boys and girls ages 7 through 18, the camp will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Merritt College, Mens Gym, 12500 Campus Drive, Oakland, CA  94619, call (925) 969-3432 or email Jennifer Moilanen at jennifermoilanen@yahoo.com. The first 75 youngsters who arrive at camp Saturday will receive free T-shirt. Powe also plans to have other speakers on hand for the camp, including teachers, a lawyer and a banker.
    Admission is free.
“Basically he just wants to give back,” said Bernard Ward, Powe’s mentor and friend. “He always said if he made it, he wanted to do whatever he can for kids. He knows a lot of kids can’t afford it.”
Leon Powe was drafted in the second round (No. 49 overall) by the Nuggets, traded to the Celtics and signed a two-year guaranteed contract for $400,000-plus per season, but Powe is using his NBA money to benefit the community.
Fatherless at 2, homeless at 7, eventually into the foster system. His mother, Connie Landry, died when he was a high school junior. He’s had two major knee reconstructions. “Sometimes, I wonder if I’m even supposed to be here,” Powe says. “But my mother had that will to survive. I think that’s what I have in me.” He recently flew to Colorado to personally thank Dr. Richard Steadman for doing such a great job rebuilding his knee.
“You just got to keep working hard, there ain’t nothing else about it,” Powe says. “It ain’t cars, it ain’t money, it ain’t none of that. This is a dream come true, you get to play in the NBA, you want to be the best player you can be. I know I do.”
The Celtics are encouraged by what they’ve seen so far. Assistant coach Tony Brown’s opinion began to crystallize after an early August training camp in Las Vegas that featured rookies, but also veterans such as Jermaine O’Neal and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Brown said. “But he’s a physical-type player. He can rebound well. I was just impressed with his energy overall. And he wasn’t playing against any slouches — there were about 60 NBA players there.” Brown said the Celtics have a need for a physical inside presence. “It’s amazing the kind of attitude he has,” Brown said, alluding to the challenges Powe overcame while growing up. “He’s well-mannered and very polite. I also like he can leave that at the door. When he competes he can take it to another level. “If he can keep that going, he should have a nice NBA career.”
Powe and Ward are founding an agency to place foster children and group-home children in caring homes and top-flight schools.
He and his younger brother, Tim, spent close to a dozen years shifting between shelters, drug infested tenements, motel rooms and cramped apartments while their mother Connie Landry tried to keep the family afloat by hustling at local flea markets in Oakland. She battled drugs, and eventually, all but one of her seven children became wards of the county.
He has lived the worst kind of nightmare. Powe did not have much support as a kid, much less a real childhood. “It was kind of a forced maturity,” Cal coach Ben Braun says. “He didn’t have a lot of time to sort things out. He had to survive and advance.”
When Powe was 2 and Tim was just a newborn, their father walked out on the family. Five years later, Powe’s own nightmare began.
He was at school, his mother was at work and his grandmother was baby sitting at the family’s three-bedroom North Oakland duplex when Tim, then 5, came across a box of matches and accidentally set the house on fire. Powe was driven home from school by his uncle when he saw flames, fire trucks and his mother crying in the street.
“I was just hoping nobody in my family was hurt because I knew my grandma, she couldn’t move that fast,” he says. “Then, I started to get mad, thinking about all my stuff. I had my own computer. There was nothing left. It was the beginning of a long nightmare.”
The home was reduced to cinders and the family became nomads, living briefly with Landry’s mother and later with an aunt, before embarking on an odyssey that included as many as 30 temporary stops at some of the worst housing in the Bay area. “The worst part was the fact we were always moving,” Powe says. “I never really got to stay at a place I wanted to stay at. But life goes in different ways sometimes.”
Connie Landry was the face of desperation. “She had to hold everything down,” Powe says. “She didn’t have a second parent in the house, so she almost had to play both the mother and the father, which was difficult because of the money problems she was going through.”
As the oldest son, he missed almost an entire school year in fifth grade because he had to babysit the children while his mother worked. “I learned a lot about changing diapers and warming bottles,” he says. He had to repeat the grade.
The lack of parental supervision forced Powe to grow up fast. “I had to watch the kids until she got back,” he says. “I got to hang out at nighttime, when it was 12 and 1 o’clock, which was all bad,” he says. “You know there’s nothing good going on on the streets at that time of night.”
<>In 1998, Powe and his brother Tim were taken from his mother and placed in foster care. “I didn’t care about school, sitting in class, taking notes, doing homework,” said Powe. “I didn’t think I was going to college. I heard<> you have to have all these A’s and B’s. And I said, ‘I’m not doing it.'”
But he did care about basketball. “It didn’t hit me until my grades came
out in 9th grade,” he says. “I had messed up grades. I was ineligible for the first four games. Coach told me I couldn’t suit up. That hurt me, touched me.
<>”I was like, ‘If I had the grades, I’d have been out here playing. Let me try something to get this report card straight.’ I started going to class, focusing on my classes. My GPA rose from a 1.8 to a 2.3 and I didn’t even put all my effort into it. I kept building on that.”
<>    Powe had a 3.2 GPA his senior year. He took the SATs four times to obtain the necessary scores for admission. <>    But there was a sadness even to his success. He remained close to his mother, although the family had been torn apart. “It was frustrating,” he says. “Normal kid, you want to be home with moms and moms ain’t there.”<>Then, just four days before Powe was scheduled to play in the California state championship game his jun<>ior year in high school, his mother died at 41 from heart disease. Powe played in the game, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, but his team lost. “That was all bad. I thought about quitting,” he says. “My dream was always to buy my mother a new house and she was gone.” <>Powe got through his mother’s death, but there were other obstacles. That spring, while playing in an AAU tournament in Houston, Powe tore the ACL in his left knee while going for a dunk.
<><>    He came back to play his senior year at Tech and lead his team to the state finals again, almost single-handedly beating powerful Westchester. But he never had any formal rehab on his knee and when he got to Cal, he was put on a grueling training program. Powe made an immediate impact and was named Pac-10 Rookie of the Year despite playing with the torn ACL. He was in such pain, the doctors determined that he needed an operation on the knee. He had a bone graft done in April of 2004 and had reconstructive knee surgery the following fall.
Ward says he and Powe are working on a plan to eventually collect all of Leon’s brothers and sisters, five of whom are in foster care, under one roof. “In my family, we don’t give up, especially when it gets tough,” Powe says. “If you give up, where you gonna go? And I wanted to go to the top.” Powe says he wants to be the family and community role model he didn’t have as a kid. He says he eventually will earn his degree from Cal.
“My mom told me to finish,” Powe says. “I gotta carry that out.”
Powe and Ward has also began a venture called All Star Sports Media” that creates and specializes in video recruitment packages, season highlights, documentaries, corporate events, fundraisers, concerts and videos for athletes, entertainers and corporate clients in HD. This DVD is a great tool for athletes to present to college sports recruiters or entertainers to record labels, commercial, video, film and TV producers!
